This is the Richard Nixon that the White House wanted American's to see: the man who was triumphant in establishing relations with China, shaping a conservative Supreme Court and generating a cease-fire in Vietnam. Through the mastery of the newly conceived "photo op," the Nixon operatives tirelessly sough to create a favorable view of the president. In these situations of limited access, the challenge for photographers was to try to pierce this facade.
