By years's end, the United States had won a stunning victory in the Persian Gulf and Bush's popularity was at an all-time high. It was virtually inconceivable that he could lose in 1992. He hit the campaign trail with confidence and energy, but the economy was in trouble and bush would be facing a most formidable campaigner - Bill Clinton.
