Life was not getting better for many Americans. The economy was in recession and businesses were downsizing. And many Americans thought George Bush seemed oblivious. During a visit to a grocer's convention, these vague concerns about Bush found an image - one that came to dominate a campaign, but one that was unfair. Bush was given a demonstration of a new way to track nventory on store shelves with a hand-held computer, but reporters misinterpreted his reaction and their stories helped foster an images of a president detached from the everyday lives and concerns of the American people.
