Washington, D.C.: On a May evening, tourist flock to the Lincoln Memorial at the west end of Washington's Reflecting Pool. Completed in 1922, each of the neoclassical monument's 36 columns represent the states in the Union at the time Lincoln died. About his statuue, it says: "In this Temple, as in the hearts of the people, for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever."
