After several trips to Colorado’s North Fork Valley, Dick wanted to thank the miners. He wanted them to know how much their cooperation had meant, so he created an exhibition for them, to show his appreciation. Avedon and Wilson tacked up large prints on the exterior wall of the bathhouse next to the hill where they went underground. That was the first time any of the portraits were exhibited. It seemed fitting that they were seen first not by detached museum audiences, but the miners themselves.
