Women in the New South Africa 1: The Vacuum Cleaner
For many women at the margins of society, little has changed in the last 10 years. In an almost cruel caricature, this woman carries a vacuum cleaner on her head in the same way that her rural counterparts might still balance a basket containing fresh produce or wood for the fire. A huge number of poorer women in urban areas work as domestics and cleaners, with long hours, low wages and often live far from their homes and families.
