Afghan Presidential election
During a rally at Kabul Stadium on October 6, 2004, the last day of the presidential campaign and three days before the election, supporters dress candidate Abdul Rashid Dostom in the traditional Uzbek clothing of Northern Afghanistan. His headdress symbolizes protection by God, and his belt symbolizes strength. The controversial Uzbek general and veteran warlord has been a powerful figure since the Soviet invasion. The town of Shebergan, in the province of Mazar-e-Sharif ( North of Kabul), is his stronghold. Dostom is well known for his ability to survive by switching sides in Afghanistan's complex puzzle of shifting alliances. Kabul. Afghanistan. 2004
