Coup de Grâce. Iraq
April 6, 2003 was one of the most amazing days of my life. The fighting was intense. The deaths were numerous. The smoke never cleared. The roar of war never ceased. In the midst of it all I saw this man die.
He struggled to put out the flames on his back until a soldier, firing over my shoulder as I shot photos, fired past my right ear and ended his life.
I sat down for a moment to reflect on what I had seen. Then, stood again as the war raged. I think this moment changed me somewhere inside. Whether the change was for good or ill, I do not know. All I knew was that I would not be quite the same as I was before.
