Mike Salisbury, the art director of West Magazine, the Los Angeles Times' Sunday supplement of yore, sent me to Monument Valley to photograph Ryan O'Neal wearing six different cowboy shirts. He was there filming a movie called "The Wild Rovers." In a moment of wandering I discovered an abandoned Navajo hogan with toys and clothes strewn about by coyotes. I approached this doll's head on my knees with a 17mm lens. Later in a slide show, the group America picked this out as their album cover for "Alibi."
