Oldest of the Mascarene Islands, Mauritius is the only country in the world outside of India where Indians are a majority--68 percent of the island's 1.2 million people. Indian workers were first brought to the volcanic island from Pondichery, then a French possession in India, as early as 1729, though most arrived during British colonial times to work the island's sugar plantations.
