Over the traditional marriage fire, a Trinidadian Hindu pundit, or holy man, helps the couple make an offering of parched rice, or "laya homa," a sacrifice of food in the hope of prosperity. The vows of love, duty, and fidelity that the couple takes in front of the fire are considered sacred and unbreakable since they are repeated in the presence of Agnidev, the Hindu god of fire.
