During
the last week of his campaign, Bush began showing an uptick
in the polls and the gap between him and Clinton began to narrow.
A Bush victory was still possible. During a whistle-stop tour
through Ohio, campaign manager Jim Baker had put on his coat
preparing to watch Bush deliver his speech. As he was leaving
the presidential car, an aide handed him the latest poll results,
showing Clinton once again widening the gap. Baker knew immediately
that the Bush campaign was dead.
