Once the American buildup
had gotten underway in mid-1965, most western photographers turned their
attention to the U.S. troops. This left most of the day-to-day ARVN operations
to Vietnamese photographers working for the news services. Largely unsung,
their work required as much, if not more, bravery than their higher-paid
Western colleagues. They also died in greater numbers, and contributed
some of the best photographs of the war.
