On a story for the Tennessean, Ed shot pictures that showed the deplorable living conditions of migrant farm workers. At the time,  Ed thought that his photos would make a difference in their lives. Years later, in the 1950's, news reports were publishing stories about migrant farm workers living in "near starvation" in California.  Ed responded again by documenting the plight of a family of sharecroppers, which included these two young girls.
In San Diego, there was a big community of Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts. At a social function, these children were told to dance with each other, and the boy's embarrassed expression tells it all.
