The Photographer's Diary:
Hope and Horror in Sierra Leone
by Martin Lueders

December 14:

This man is one of several hundred amputees at Waterloo Displacement Camp. He told me he had been separated from his wife and children, and was walking towards an ECOMOG checkpoint. He was caught by RUF rebels who asked him where he was going, and he told them. They said, "We have a message for you to deliver to ECOMOG." Then they forced his arm onto a table and cut off his hand with a machete, then said "That's the message." Then someone else grabbed him and cut off his ears with a knife. He still has no idea where his wife and children are.

This man was attacked by the rebels, who chopped off both of his hands with a machete. He said that his main difficulty is when he has to ask (or pay) people to help him eat or go to the bathroom.

This man is using a leather prosthesis that was produced by the Adventist Development Relief Organization (ADRO). Although someone needs to help the amputee to put the device on their arm, they can at least feed themselves.
