In a poppy field in Sheberghan, the capital city of Northern Afghanistan's Jowzjan Province, Afghan farmers cut their poppies. They must wait for one day to collect the secreted resin. Farmers, who earn around $240 U.S. per kilogram, sell the opium close to the Pakistan border where the market is better. 2004
