The might of the Israeli Defense Forces rolled into West Beirut following the assassination of Bashir Gemayel, the Christian Lebanese president, in mid-September 1982. He was the man upon whom the Israeli government had pinned their hopes for a "New Order" in the Middle East.

On the day of the onslaught on West Beirut, I left my car near the border of the divided city and went on foot in search of Israeli troops. In urban fighting it's better to run with the soldiers. I finally met up with some Israeli armor. A tank was rumbling down a street littered with rubble, shooting and setting on fire anything that moved.
