Access to the Presidency |
While in Capetown, South Africa, the Clintons were taken by President Mandela to the prison on Robben Island. In an extraordinary visit the tight pool photographed Mandela, the Clintons, and Graca Machel as they visited the actual cell in which President Mandela was incarcerated for 18 of his 26 years in prison. My turn came to move into the doorway when the pool of photographers were finished. Mandela was leading the group out of the cell. The scene was a little backlit. But when I see the picture now I think that somehow that ray of light behind Mandela adds to what I was experiencing personally - the utter amazement and incredulity I was feeling, at this giant of a man's ability to survive such a place, and become the President of South Africa.
