RealAudio: "You can see
clear to the horizon..."

December Sunset - Late in a December afternoon, Bro, Tracy and I arrived in Monument Valley, Utah, as a storm was coming in. I hurried to set up camp before dark. Then suddenly, 10 minutes before setting, the sun dropped below the clouds. In a world where the sky is unobstructed by the land, on stormy days there is a small open space between the clouds and the horizon. As the sun moves briefly through that space, the light is beautiful and dramatic. The monuments were lit up red against the dark sky.

The rest of the weekend was windy and bitter cold, but for ten minutes, Monument Valley had once more revealed its magic, and we were there.
