In 1998, the U.S. experienced one of the longest droughts of this century and farmers and ranchers experienced depressed markets in the hog and grain industry.  This year a farm crisis has been declared and people who once produced food are eligible for food stamps.  Accessing food through community supported agriculture or urban gardens and learning how to prepare safe food for quality and taste is one way of creating a secure food system.

In response to not having a hot lunch program, community members created a garden-kitchen classroom that provides the experience of growing food, preparing food, and eating food as part of the curriculum.
