Dispatches: Notes from the Field
In July we present seven dispatches. Five of them were unsolicited, sent in as a result of reading my encouragement to photographers.

PHOTOJOURNALISM
Remembering Slim & Arnold
May 29, Memorial Day -- Photographer George "Slim" Aarons reclined in a wheelchair in a V.A. hospital in Montrose, N.Y. Recently slowed by a stroke, his eyesight failing, and only able to communicate by squeezing friends' or relatives' hands, Aarons seemed engaged nonetheless.

Change is Inevitable
This is about process, not controversy. Controversy has a way of becoming ugly, often before it works itself out, or not. Controversy hangs around and nibbles at our heels.

A Visit With Endearing, and Enduring, Friends
As the train raced across the Bavarian countryside, a 40-minute ride from the Franz-Josef-Strauss Airport to the heart of Munich, our thoughts were less on the scenic beauty that unfolded before us than the friends we had come to see.

A Letter From New Orleans - So That's a Glock 9
My neighborhood was surrounded today. By the same Humvees, troops and large-caliber machine guns that surround villages in Iraq and Afghanistan.

One Really Great Idea and One Really Stupid Idea
You often hear about interesting ideas and projects in the world of photography. Some make you say, "Excellent!" out loud and some make you mutter obscenities to yourself for fear of frightening the children.
by James Colburn
Common Cents

Nuts & Bolts
When newspapers and newsmagazines increased their color printing capacities, as much to print more color ads as color stories, they also started printing more color news pictures.

ASSIGNMENT SHEET
Through a Lens Dimly: THE NEW CHIEF/THE OLD NAVY PART II
The New Chief didn't have very good luck bringing in fresh talent. The man had never been a photographer so I guess that he didn't really know what kind of qualities to look for.

Through a Lens Dimly: A SPORTS SHOOTER I'M NOT PART II
A great sports photo often becomes an icon and comes readily to mind whenever it is mentioned. A few that I can think of are the shot of Lou Gehrig...
